SEND Workforce Development
This webpage now lists the wide range of SEND training available to Sheffield settings from a number of providers. This is part of the Workforce Development area of the whole city SEND and Inclusion Strategy. This new approach is a work in progress and we are hoping to make it easier to locate specific training from a number of providers by listing it all on this webpage.
The training has been separated by the areas of healthy child development and to reflect the broad areas of need by the SEND Code of Practice (Communication and Interaction / Cognition and Learning / Social, Emotional and Mental Health / Sensory and/or Physical), plus one category for systems and processes. Please use the buttons below to navigate to the area of training that you are looking for.
Where no dates or locations are listed on the website, this is because there are multiple dates available and these are listed on the Eventbrite booking page. Costs to settings have been indicated as applicable.
For any queries or feedback about this new approach, please contact enquiries@learnsheffield.co.uk.

Good Sleep Awareness for Education Settings |
Quality sleep is crucial for children's growth and development. Getting a good night's sleep can help them perform better at school, react more quickly to situations, have a sharper memory, learn more effectively, and solve problems. It also reduces their susceptibility to colds and other minor illnesses, making them less irritable and better behaved.
Young people are particularly at risk of experiencing sleep issues. There are various reasons why people may struggle to sleep. Some, like changes in their brain that make them want to sleep later, cannot be helped, while others, such as their use of social media and homework schedule, can be managed.
The course covers:
- Importance of sleep
- Why we sleep
- Importance for education
- What is Narcolepsy?
- Signs and symptoms with tools and signposting

Toileting, Continence and Personal Care for Education Settings< |
Most children entering school are toilet trained and can manage their personal care needs competently before they start. However, some children may not be at that stage due to reasons such as developmental delay, medical needs, behavioural issues, and physical or learning disabilities. Some children may be continent but still require assistance with personal care due to difficulties accessing toileting facilities or dealing with personal care/cleaning tasks independently. Personal care involves washing, touching, or carrying out an agreed procedure in personal areas to care for another person. This may be due to their young age, physical difficulties, medical needs, or special educational needs. It is important to recognise and reiterate that all children, without exception, have an educational entitlement, irrespective of their difficulties with toileting and personal care.
It's essential to approach toileting and personal care tasks with professionalism, dignity, and respect for the child. The highest health and safety standards must be maintained to safeguard children, parents, staff, and the educational setting. This should be done by providing a consistent approach within a framework that recognises the rights and responsibilities of everyone involved.
The course covers:
- Legislation & Local Policies
- Definition of Intimate Care and Personal Care
- Principles of Intimate Care and Personal Care
- Promoting good bladder and bowel health in schools
- Hygiene standards/provision of school toilets
- Managing incontinence in schools
- National legislation
