#DiverseEd Sheffield Hub

We are pleased to be running a #DiverseEd Sheffield Hub in the 2024-25 school year.

Each half-term we will host an in-person 90 minute session for DEIB leaders, champions and advocates to come together to grow consciousness, build confidence and develop competence. All sessions will take place at Learn Sheffield.

Each session will include:

  • An inspiring guest speaker
  • Sharing best practice from the network
  • Reflecting on current challenges
  • Discussing what is having impact
  • Networking with colleagues to forge collaborative projects

Course Overview

In this session we will:

  • Reflect on what gives us a sense of belonging
  • Explore our own relationships and journeys with
  • Consider how we gather staff voice on belonging
  • Review the perception gap between stakeholder groups
  • Consider how to create a belonging culture and a belonging curriculum

Discuss the policies and practices that need to change to increase levels of belonging

Bennie Kara is the Co-Founder of #DiverseEd. After 20 years in schools as a teacher and leader, she now works full time as a speaker, trainer and consultant on the curriculum. She is the author of ‘A Little Guide for Teachers: Diversity in Schools’ and the co-editor of ‘Diverse Educators: A Manifesto’.

Jo Brassington

Jo (they/them) is an experienced primary school teacher, and the co-founder of Pride & Progress: a podcast and platform which amplifies the voices of LGBTQ+ educators. Through Pride & Progress, Jo has spent several years immersed in conversations about how to make our educational spaces more LGBTQ+ inclusive. They co-authored the award winning book ‘Pride & Progress: Making Schools LGBT+ Inclusive Spaces’.

Addressing Microaggressions

Course Overview

In this session we will:

  • Understand what microaggressions are
  • Recognise prejudiced attitudes targeting marginalised groups
  • Reflect on how microaggressions affirm stereotypes
  • Become aware of the impact of microaggressions on individuals and on groups
  • Explore the difference between microinsults, microassaults and microinvalidations

Hannah Wilson is a Leadership Development consultant, coach and trainer. After nearly two decades leading in education she left Executive Headship in 2019. She is the Co-Founder of #WomenEd and #DiverseEd and she is the Director of Diverse Educators. She is the Co-Editor of Diverse Educators: A Manifesto.

Increasing Neurodiversity Awareness

Course Overview

In this session we will:

  • Understand what neurodiversity is
  • Think about your ‘learner in mind’
  • Explore common types of ND and their prevalence
  • Become aware of adjustments we can make in the classroom
  • Share tips for supporting your ‘learner in mind’

Speaker

Catrina Lowri

Catrina Lowri founded Neuroteachers to help educational settings work with their autistic and neurodivergent learners to find simple solutions for inclusive practice. Catrina is neurodivergent herself, having the dual diagnosis of dyslexia and bipolar disorder. She is a qualified special needs teacher and an experienced SENCO and advisory teacher. Catrina’s particular area of research is around exclusion prevention. She has written two papers for the Good Autism Practice Journal. The first in 2018 was a case study about preventing exclusion for an autistic, ADHD boy with extreme demand avoidance. The second, published in 2020 looked at reintegrating autistic children into school after a period of persistent absence. Catrina believes passionately in true inclusion for all.
