This online briefing will provide a refresher for headteachers about statutory assessment and will also include lessons learned from the 2023/24 cycle.

This session will be led by Amy Parry-McDermott who will provide information and guidance around the assessment of EXS writing at the end of KS1. It is aimed at those teachers who are new to Y2, in schools where they are continuing to use the STA Teacher Assessment Frameworks for writing (now optional) to assess writing at the end of KS1.

Audience: Teachers New to Year 2
This session may also be useful for Y3 teachers wishing to have a greater understanding of Y2 writing assessment, to inform their planning.

This online session will cover the DfE guidance for administering the Phonics Screening Check for teachers and Tas (who may be administering the check) and are new to the process in both Year 1 and Year 2. The scoring of the check will also be covered in this session.

Each year, the STA releases a suite of materials that are used to train external LA moderators. ‘Pupil Can’ statements are unpicked, and clarification and examples provided. This training is offered annually, to all Year 6 teachers, to ensure that everyone is in receipt of the same messages around assessment and moderation.

These sessions will be led by Diane Stokes and are for experienced Year 6 teachers. The 2024/25 STA guidance will be shared during the programme in addition to the requirements for carrying out moderation activities.

Following the training, it may be possible for participants to join an external moderation in a ‘shadow’ role.

This short online session will cover the DfE guidance for administering the Phonics Screening Check to Y1 pupils for teachers who are unfamiliar with the process and materials involved in the Phonics Screening Check.

This year, KS1 teacher assessment is non-statutory, however, this session is for experienced Y2 teachers who would like to continue to use the STA Teacher Assessment Frameworks to assess reading, writing and mathematics at the end of KS1. This session will be led by Diane Stokes who will provide information and guidance for teachers who are not new to Y2.

This session will cover the key documents produced to support the preparation for the test, including timetable variations, access arrangements, security of test papers and monitoring visits.

These sessions will be led by Diane Stokes and are for external moderators. The current 2023/24 guidance from STA will be delivered in addition to refresher training in moderation skills.

This training is for experienced Y6 teachers who are interested in joining the city-wide external moderation team and for existing moderators (lead and shadow moderators).

There will be a new standardisation exercise for external moderators for 2023/24.
