Inclusion Task Force

SEND Workforce Development

This webpage now lists the wide range of SEND training available to Sheffield settings from a number of providers. This is part of the Workforce Development area of the whole city SEND and Inclusion Strategy. This new approach is a work in progress and we are hoping to make it easier to locate specific training from a number of providers by listing it all on this webpage.

The training has been separated by the areas of healthy child development and to reflect the broad areas of need by the SEND Code of Practice (Communication and Interaction / Cognition and Learning / Social, Emotional and Mental Health / Sensory and/or Physical), plus one category for systems and processes. Please use the buttons below to navigate to the area of training that you are looking for.

Where no dates or locations are listed on the website, this is because there are multiple dates available and these are listed on the Eventbrite booking page. Costs to settings have been indicated as applicable.

For any queries or feedback about this new approach, please contact enquiries@learnsheffield.co.uk.

0-5 SEND Team: Ordinarily Available Provision – Supporting you and your Early Years Setting

This newly developed training package provides early years professionals with a valuable insight into the wider support available from the 0–5 SEND team.

To achieve this, access to the right support, in the right place and at the right time is essential. Wherever children and young people live in Sheffield, we want them to have their additional learning needs met. For most children, attending their local setting with other children from their community is the best way to ensure this happens. To achieve this, settings must have a core offer that meets the needs of all children, including those with SEND. This core offer is referred to as the Ordinarily Available Provision. It is the range of activities, opportunities and strategies that are offered as good basic practice to meet a range of additional needs without the need for a formal diagnosis or specialist support.

The session aims to outline the early years offer for all settings, including what to expect from the Portage team, practical ways to support children with SEND, and the use of helpful strategies and visuals.

It will also introduce offers from our partner agencies and guide practitioners on when to consider further assessments, helping ensure a consistent and informed approach to early intervention and support.

Audience: All early years practitioners, childminders, managers, SENCos, teachers, teaching assistants, year 1 teachers and leaders.

Communication & Health Passports Awareness for Education Settings

A Communication and Health Passport in health and social care is a customised, easy-to-use booklet or document that provides important information to help individuals communicate their needs to doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. It may also be useful to help other services understand needs in other settings.

Individuals with learning disabilities and autism should have a communication and health passport that can be updated regularly based on changes in their health, well-being, and interactions with health and care services. The passport should be completed and updated by the individual or their careers. This course provides an overview of what local services, including education providers, should consider and highlights the important role of health and social care providers in initiating conversations about communication and health passports.

The course covers:

  • What is a Communication and Health Passport?
  • Who is it for?
  • How is it developed, including all important information about a child's support needs, healthcare, learning disability, communication preferences, and how to make hospital visits or health appointments easier?
  • Parents and caregivers are important in keeping the document current and supporting them in doing this
