On the 11th of October Julie Kettlewell, from the Huntington Research School delivered a session called ‘The Importance of Considering Learning Behaviors When Implementing Cognitive Science in the Classroom’, as part of the Learn Sheffield Online Autumn Festival.

Julie explained that there ‘is more interest than ever’ in developing self-regulated learning in classrooms, and this can be done by covering three key points:

  • Cognition
  • Metacognition
  • Motivation

The session aimed to equip colleagues with the knowledge of how to apply these findings to their own lessons, as well as asking themselves the question ‘where do we need to intervene?’ to make their lessons more effective.

The session also touched on techniques to improve motivation and metacognition through techniques such as Scaffolding, where the teacher’s aim is to go from ‘coach to supportive audience.’ This aims to promote confidence, self-belief and ultimately the motivation to use their cognition to learn, and metacognition to understand how they learn.

This session was recorded, we look forward to sharing that with you soon. To see and access more online events as part of the Learn Sheffield Autumn Online Festival, head to our website.
