On 5th October, Pran Patel delivered a session called ‘Introduction to Antiracism and Subconscious Bias’, the first session in the  Developing a Culture of Equality strand of the Learn Sheffield Autumn Online Festival.

The session explored the meaning of unconscious bias and how it affects our lives and society. It also explored the concept of unearned privilege and how it can affect people in their day-to-day life. Participants were asked to consider which groups they ascribe to and then rank them in order of importance, as well as learning about the difference between a safe space and a brave space and how they can be useful when addressing bias and privilege.

The session also touched on the idea of conducting audits within a setting to ask questions to assess where you are as an organisation in terms of policies, equity and how the curriculum reflects global society.

Following sessions will explore how these factors can affect students and staff within education setting, including how having racial conversations, anti-racist behaviour, how subconscious bias can affect assessments and the importance of decolonising the curriculum.

This session was recorded, we look forward to sharing that with you soon. To see and access more online events as part of the Learn Sheffield Autumn Online Festival, head to our website.
